At the request of Michel Roth, a researcher and musician at the FHNW, we were asked to design a book on his research project, “Alpine networks of connectedness”. In his work, Michel and his team investigated cable cars and made them make sound. The ropes that stretch across the mountains are under great tension and slight changes in weather, temperature and environment can cause oscillations in the rope. Within the rope, they overlap and amplify each other or fade away (a so-called cross-fade). These vibrations are too low to be perceived by bare ear, but a contact microphone can be connected and deep, bass-like sounds emerge. In my publication, a single-column text runs through all the chapters, just like a rope. Through a randomized system of paragraph formats with different indents, the text starts to swing. Semi-transparent paper allows a cross-fade within the text column. A unique image is created throughout the text. Each chapter lays separately in a slipcase, treating them like a station on a cable car ride. Once you have read a chapter, you arrived at a station and may enjoy the view through a generous image layout.
